IDC forecasts global PC shipments to decline 11.3% in 2026 and average selling prices to rise sharply amid memory constraints. Its PC market outlook also warns that some early purchases were pulled forward ahead of expected shortages and price increases.
Weak units can coexist with high prices
A fall in shipment volume does not mean every seller’s revenue falls by the same percentage. Higher component prices, premium mix and delayed replacement can move value differently. It also does not mean demand disappears for gaming, education, business refresh or repair.
The risk for retailers is a barbell market: price-sensitive buyers postpone purchases while necessary replacements seek the best available configuration. Mid-range models with no clear use case can become slow stock.
Buy by use case, not specification alone
Define good-better-best bundles for office work, study, creative tasks and gaming. State RAM, storage, display, warranty and upgradeability clearly. Do not label every modern laptop an “AI PC” without the required hardware and vendor support.
For desktops, consider configurable orders and component-level availability. For laptops, track sell-through by exact SKU because memory and storage variants can behave differently.
Control ageing risk
Set maximum weeks of supply, markdown checkpoints and an open-box policy. Negotiate smaller replenishment batches and clarify supplier price protection. Sell compatible RAM or SSD upgrades only after checking warranty implications.
Watch inquiry-to-order conversion, finance requests, cancellation due to price, gross margin after warranty cost and days since last sale. Search interest alone is not demand.
Practical response
Use educational comparison tables rather than blanket discounts. A DokanEasy store can separate configurations as variants and monitor SKU-level orders. In a contracting global market, liquidity and accurate compatibility information are competitive assets.
Data limitation: IDC’s numbers are forecasts and global aggregates; local currency, import supply and buyer segments can produce different outcomes.
