The weakening signal
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported that 2025 watch export value fell 1.7% to CHF 24.4 billion and unit volume fell 4.8% to 14.6 million, 740,000 fewer watches than in 2024. Its 2025 summary describes continued pressure and weak consumer confidence.
Value falling less than volume suggests mix and price effects: fewer units can coexist with resilient high-end value. That distinction matters to ecommerce operators. A weakening mass or mid-price segment cannot be understood from total value alone.
Do not call it a permanent collapse
The same federation said first-half 2026 export value was only 0.7% below the prior year, with strength in markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico and India. Its statistics page later reported September 2026 growth. The evidence therefore supports a weak 2025 volume trend with uneven 2026 recovery—not a claim that watch demand everywhere is still falling.
Implications for small retailers
Reduce broad speculative buys in look-alike fashion watches. Instead, identify price bands and use cases: gifting, durable everyday wear, enthusiast models and premium collectibles. Each behaves differently. Keep hero products available while using preorder or supplier-on-demand arrangements for slow, expensive references.
Authenticity and after-sales service become more important when buyers hesitate. Product pages should include exact reference number, movement type, case size, material, water-resistance wording from the manufacturer, warranty issuer and return conditions. Never use 'Swiss made' unless the supplier documentation supports it.
Use sell-through, not supplier urgency
Calculate 30-, 60- and 90-day sell-through by price band. Track gross margin after discounts, payment fees, insured delivery and returns. A distributor's 'limited stock' message is not demand evidence. Reorder only when delivered sales and lead time justify it.
For premium items, photograph the actual unit or clearly label manufacturer imagery, record serial numbers privately, and use tamper-evident packing. Offer inspection procedures that protect both buyer and seller. Do not publish serial numbers where they can be copied.
A cautious assortment experiment
Test nine SKUs: three entry, three mid-price and three premium or enthusiast products. Use the same campaign length and record qualified product-page visits, add-to-cart rate, completed payment, delivery, return and inquiry reason. This reveals whether interest is concentrated in price, design or trust.
Publish the collection through DokanEasy with reference-specific variants and warranty fields. If a model has no reliable replenishment path, state limited availability without manufacturing scarcity.
Bottom line
Official 2025 data show weakening Swiss watch units and slightly lower value, followed by a more mixed 2026 picture. The retailer response is segmented buying, stronger authenticity evidence and faster stock review—not a blanket exit from watches or a claim that every price tier is weak.
